Are You Celebrating Mardi Gras Today?

I think that I may say that an American has not seen the United States until he has seen Mardi Gras in New Orleans.  - Mark Twain, American writer (1835–1910)

What exactly is Mardi Gras? Is it a party, a parade, a festival? I didn't know the answer, so I went looking. It turns out that it is based on religious activities.
Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”—the final feasting before the Christian season of Lent, which begins the day after Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday.
Fat Tuesday is also called Shrove Tuesday, a name that comes from the practice of shriving—purifying oneself through confession—prior to Lent.
For many Christians, Mardi Gras  (February 13 this year) is a time to receive penance and absolution. It is the last day to finish up the eggs, milk, and fat that are forbidden during the 40-day Lenten fast, which begins the next day (Ash Wednesday).
In countries with large Roman Catholic populations, Mardi Gras is also a day of revelry with festivals, parades, masked balls, and lavish dinners. In North America, New Orleans is the most known for its Mardi Gras celebrations with marching bands, decorated floats, colorful costumes and masks, lots of beads, and King Cakes. It is the celebration before Lent.

What Can You Make With Fabric?

There are some projects that stop me in my tracks. Kathie's self portrait is one of them.

If you have ever met Kathie, our Fabric Dept. Manager, even for just a minute, you will know that this is a portrait of her. I love the whimsy of this, and it is made of fabrics and some yarn. Then she gave it to Brad, our Frame Shop Manager, and he built a custom frame and created a mat from fabrics to compliment the art. I am once again blown away at the creativity of our staff!

So here is your challenge?
What will you create with fabric?
Feel free to stop by the store and share your creations with us. We really enjoy seeing what our customers are creating!

DIY Indoor Garden Planter

This project is perfect for those of us with a "Black Thumb".

Paint an unfinished wood planter with Brown acrylic paint and allow it to dry. Cover the sides with plant themed scrapbooking paper, then add moss and an artificial fern. It is simple to make and will never need to be watered.
